Founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan, USA and now headquartered in Indianapolis Indiana, USA, Kiwanis International is a thriving organization of service- and community-minded individuals who support children and young adults around the world. More than 600,000 Kiwanis-family members in 96 countries make their mark by responding to the needs of their communities and pooling their resources to address worldwide issues. Kiwanis Club of Colombo City: Serving the Children of Sri Lanka
Chartered on 30th September 1982, Kiwanis Club of Colombo City was sponsored by the Springfield Kiwanis Club of the USA through Mr. John Reed, the then Ambassador of the USA in Sri Lanka. In keeping with the Kiwanis theme, Building better lives for underprivileged children, the Club has successfully carried out many service projects uplifting the living standards of Sri Lankan children.

Throughout its history, the Kiwanis name has been synonymous with endeavours that build character, knowledge, commerce, communities and - through genuine concern for children-hope.
The Name:
The name Kiwanis stems from a North American Indian phrase Nunc Kee-wanis, which, like many aboriginal terms, had a variety of meanings, including: "We have a good time" "We make a noise"
or "We trade".
