![]() The December 2004 Tsunami that struck Sri Lanka and the other Indian Ocean countries left behind extensive destruction to human life and property. The Pearl of the Indian Ocean became a sea of tears.
The Kiwanis Club of Colombo City as a part of the International Kiwanis movement is committed to serving children. The Kiwanis Club of Colombo City therefore took it upon themselves to demonstrate that Kiwanians worldwide live by their beliefs and swung into action. After the first phase of relief measures , which constituted the collection and distribution of essential supplies, food items, drinking water, medicine and clothes in the affected areas, it was obvious that rehabilitation and long term relief for those living in refugee camps all over the country was the need of the hour. The needs of children, including the construction and renovation of orphanages, schools and child-care centres were considered.Having looked at all these options it was decided to undertake a housing project for families with children whose houses were destroyed. A project plan was drafted and an appeal was made to the Kiwanis International Foundation and to Kiwanis clubs worldwide for aid.
