Pre-school for Tsunami affected children -

The Kiwanis Club of Colombo City funded the construction of the pre-school building at Wel-Odaya village, Tangalle District (192kms from Colombo on the Southern coast of Sri Lanka) for the benefit of children affected by the December 2004 Tsunami disaster and other children from the area. The building was inaugurated by Hon. Mr. Sajith Premadasa, MP - Hambantota District in January 2006.

The total cost of the project was Rs. 1.2 million, which includes the cost of construction of the building, the furniture, learning aids and playground equipment. The Club is also supporting the project for two years by contributing towards the teachers' salaries.

Funds for this project were raised from Kiwanis Clubs worldwide, the principal donor being Kiwanis Club of Schwaebisch Hall-Germany, which donated a sum of Euro 5,000/- (Rs. 639,000). Other donors included Kiwanis Club of Mt. Olive - USA, Kiwanis Club of Taipei Diana - Taiwan, Kiwanis Charitable Fund - USA, Kiwanis Caudebec-Mascaret – France, Mighty Minds Montessori, and local Kiwanis Club members. There are 25 children in the age group of 2½ to 6 availing of the
pre-school facilities.
