Lady Ridgeway Hospital, Colombo-8, serving mothers and children, is one of the biggest and oldest hospitals in Asia, but it had no specially equipped Intensive Care Unit until Kiwanis Club of Colombo City undertook to equip one (above) at a cost of Rs. 22 million during the period 1987-2000

The Kiwanis Intensive Care Unit with 12 beds, established in 1987, was the only facility and the first of its kind in Sri Lanka for children who could not afford to avail of specialised private medical care. Built at an initial cost of Rs. 8 million and subsequently upgraded and maintained until the year 2000 at a further cost of Rs. 14 million, it was the club's flagship project for 15 years.

The idea was born in 1983-the Kiwanis International Year of the Child. In recognition of the need for specialised, life saving medical facilities for underprivileged children in Sri Lanka, the major emphasis programme of the Club with the objective to"share good health with children" was launched. A proposal was presented to the Ministry of Women's Affairs and Teaching Hospitals in July 1984 for establishment of an Intensive Care Unit for Children at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital. This encompassed not only the Main Ward but also a Sterile Supply Room, Medical Officers' & Consultants' Room and Lab, Sister-in-charge Room, Nursing Staff Room, Attendants’ Room, Waste Disposal Unit, Linen Room, General Office, Visitors' Lobby, Staff Rest Room and the Mothers' Welfare Unit.
