Computer aided teaching (CAT) is widely used in schools abroad, to great advantage, in teaching the aurally impaired. Whereas children in the 5-6 year age group have a vocabulary of at least two thousand words, a deaf child who enters school has virtually no reading/ writing vocabulary. It was to redress this deficiency that it was decided to set up the Computer Aided Teaching (CAT) unit at the Ceylon School for the Deaf. The Kiwanis Club of Colombo City has equipped the Computer aided teaching facility at the Ceylon School for the Deaf at Ratmalana, with 5 computers, one printer, UPS units and air conditioning equipment at a cost of Rs. 365,000. The facility was inaugurated in the presence of Rt. Rev. Duleep de Chickera, Bishop of Colombo. The Club also contributed Rs. 100,000 towards the extra allowance for staff who are teaching the students in this facility. The funds for this project were raised from the Kiwanis Charity Ball held in September 2004. Read more>> |
